Kenya Accelerates Northern Corridor: President Ruto Launches Gilgil–Nakuru–Mau Summit Road Dualling

H.E. President William Samoei Ruto launched the dualling of the 94-kilometre Gilgil–Nakuru–Mau Summit second construction site  of the Rironi–Nakuru–Mau Summit (A8) Road, reaffirming the Government’s commitment to delivering one of Kenya’s most transformative infrastructure projects.
This critical segment of the Northern Corridor is valued at USD 678.5 million and implemented under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) by Shandong Hi-Speed Road and Bridge International Engineering Co. Ltd, with completion targeted for 2027.
President Ruto, accompanied by Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir, Principal Secretary for Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua, a host of national and county leaders, and representatives from Shandong Hi-Speed Group, emphasized that today’s second-site launch marks a major acceleration of works along the corridor.
“This road is not just an infrastructure project; it is a strategic economic asset,” President Ruto said. “Its upgrade will cut travel time, reduce vehicle operating costs, and sharpen the competitiveness of farmers, traders, and transporters across Kenya and the broader East African region.”
The Gilgil–Nakuru–Mau Summit stretch will feature modern engineering upgrades including grade-separated interchanges, improved drainage, expanded dual carriageways, pedestrian facilities, and enhanced safety systems. These improvements will significantly ease congestion in high-traffic areas such asNaivasha,  Gilgil, Nakuru, Salgaa and Mau Summit which currently bear heavy freight and passenger loads.
Beyond infrastructure, the project will unlock wide-reaching socio-economic benefits: Lower transport and logistics costs, Faster access to markets, especially for perishable produce, Stronger linkages to schools, hospitals, and emergency services, Enhanced mobility and road safety
With the construction sites now operational, the Rironi–Mau Summit (A8) Road is on a firm path toward becoming a world-class highway, strengthening Kenya’s position as the region’s premier trade and logistics hub.
