President Ruto Reaffirms Road Infrastructure as a Driver of Kenya’s Economic Transformation

ELDORET, October 20, 2026 – President William Samoei Ruto has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to expand road infrastructure, announcing that construction is underway on 7,000 Kilometres of roads across the country to boost connectivity, ease transport costs and unlock economic opportunities.
Speaking during the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, the President said road infrastructure remains a key pillar of the Government’s development agenda, connecting communities to markets, services and livelihoods.
“Construction is underway on 7,000 Kilometres of roads across constituencies throughout Kenya,” President Ruto said, adding that the investments would strengthen regional trade and connect more Kenyans to economic activity.
The President highlighted key projects, including the upgrading of the Rironi–Mau Summit Highway through Naivasha, Gilgil, Nakuru and Salgaa. The highway is a critical link along the Northern Corridor, connecting Nairobi to western Kenya and onward to Uganda.
He also announced that the contract for the Lake Victoria Ring Road had been finalised. The road will connect Busia, Bondo, Kisumu, Kendu Bay, Homa Bay, Mbita and Sori to Muhuru Bay, improving access and opening up economic opportunities for communities around the lake.
In northern Kenya, development of the Isiolo–Mandera corridor through Modogashe, Wajir, El Wak and Rhamu is progressing, while the Kenol–Marua dual carriageway and the 700-kilometre Mau Mau roads are nearing completion.
The President said these investments are designed to reduce travel time and transport costs, improve the movement of goods and people, and support businesses across the country.
“Infrastructure development was one of the key promises we made to Kenyans to connect our people, open markets and create business opportunities,” he said.
He noted that the road programme forms part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), which seeks to expand economic participation, create jobs and ensure development reaches every region.
President Ruto emphasized that infrastructure development must deliver tangible benefits to citizens, particularly by improving access to markets, essential services and employment opportunities.
Looking ahead, the President said further investments in roads, energy and transport would support the next phase of the country’s economic transformation, backed by sustainable financing arrangements through the proposed National Infrastructure Fund.
He reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to equitable development, saying national progress must reach every village, ward, constituency and county so that no Kenyan or region is left behind.
